The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
